The Young Ones
Essex Book Festival is hosting a series of events for families and young people as part of this year’s festival. From author and artist events, drop-in eco-crafts, and writing workshops taking place in Chelmsford, Colchester, Maldon and Clacton, to an afternoon of storytelling in Harlow Museum Garden, we can’t think of a better way to celebrate the National Year of Reading!
We are delighted to have received Essex County Council’s Cultural Development Project funding for The Young Ones: a programme of activities for children and young people across Essex that will be taking place over the next year.
Eco-Workshops
Free drop-in Eco workshops will be taking place as part of the wider Essex Book Festival programme in May and June.

🐙 Use materials gathered from the Essex coast to create your very own Sea Monster.
Have a go at some eco-printing using ink made from Essex oak galls.
✍🏽 Write a Letter to the Future which will become part of a county-wide children’s zine.
Eco-Workshops will be taking place at
📍 Oi Chelmsford! Saturday 30 May at Museum of Chelmsford
📍 Midsummer Madness, Sunday 14 June at The Minories, Colchester
📍 Clacton Rocks! Saturday 20 June – including a Know Your Beach Workshop with Seaside Explorer’s Libby Scarfe
📍 Harlow Museum & Walled Gardens on Saturday 27 June
Plus, don’t miss the Sketching & Story Adventure at The Wild Space in Maldon on Sunday 07 June.

Essex Book Worm Podcast

Essex Book Festival is teaming up with Chelmsford Community Radio and SPARK! Young Cultural Change-makers on the Essex Book Worm Podcast Project: a unique opportunity for young people aged between 13 and 19 years living in Essex to gain the skills, knowledge and confident to create and broadcast their own monthly book podcast.

My Place: Speaking Out Spoken Word Project
If you are aged between 13 and 17 years and live in the Tendring area, and poetry and performance is your thing, why not sign up for Essex Book Festival’s series of 3 complimentary My Place Spoken Word Workshops.
Manifesto for Essex Eco Pledges
We will be inviting young people across Essex to submit short videos about what they are doing, and would like to be doing, for the environment. These ‘talking head’ videos will form part of our 2027 Manifesto for Essex Eco-Gathering.
