SUMMARY:Rags & Ruins:
DESCRIPTION:Rags & Ruins:\nDamian and Delaine Le Bas in conversation\n24 February 2026\, 7pm\nThe Minories\, Colchester\nIf rags are the shreds of culture inhabited by the unfortunate\, are ruins the shells of their oppressors’ power? Ancient prophets observed that all garments\, whether imperial purple or hermit brown\, are torn to shreds by the ages; every hut or castle becomes fluid as sand in time. What of we who are alive now\, clinging to our holdfasts\, menaced by waves of weaponised information? \n— Damian Le Bas \n  \nIn art and words\, mother and son\, artist and writer\, Delaine Le Bas and Damian Le Bas (jr) come together to reflect on shared themes that run through their work across visual art\, writing\, and lived experience. Drawing on Romani history and culture\, as well as broader questions of power\, marginalisation\, survival\, and memory\, they will discuss how materials\, stories\, and landscapes carry the traces of human conflict and endurance. \nThis event\, which forms part of a series of art-themed events\, a partnership between EA Festival\, Essex Book Festival and The Minories\, is a rare opportunity to hear two internationally acclaimed artists in dialogue\, reflecting on inheritance\, identity\, and the role of art and language in navigating a world shaped by history\, violence\, and renewal. Expect a thought-provoking evening that moves between the personal and the universal\, rooted in deep cultural knowledge. \n  \nAbout Delaine Le Bas\nDelaine Le Bas is a British artist whose work spans textile\, collage\, assemblage\, installation\, and performance. Of Romani heritage\, her practice explores Romani history\, language\, and lived experience\, addressing themes of displacement\, survival\, memory\, and cultural resilience. Using found fabrics\, clothing\, photographs\, and hand-worked materials\, her work is marked by layering and accretion\, reflecting both nomadic traditions and the fragility of inherited histories. Her work has been shown widely in the UK and internationally\, including participation in the Prague Biennale (2005 and 2007) and the first Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007. She was shortlisted for the prestigious Turner Prize in 2024\, with her installation shown at Tate Britain as part of the prize exhibition. Le Bas’ practice challenges stereotypical representations of Romani identity\, asserting its complexity\, modernity\, and political urgency. \nAbout Damian Le Bas\nDamian Le Bas (jr) is a writer and artist. His first book\, The Stopping Places\, A Journey Through Gypsy Britain\, won the prestigious Somerset Maugham Award in 2019 amongst other literary awards. His visual art has been shown internationally\, and his poetry and essays are widely published. His second book\, The Drowned Places\, was released in 2025 and nominated for the Maritime Foundation Best Book Award. Damian read Theology at Oxford University and is a native speaker of the Romani language. He grew up in Sussex\, where he lives with his partner and their two daughters\, and he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. \ndamianlebas.com/ \n  \nPhoto of Delaine Le Bas by Egbert Trogemann at Maxim Gorki Theatre\, 2025\nPhoto of Damian Le Bas by Tara Darby\n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Liquid Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Liquid Reflections – in conversation with Liliane Lijn\nTuesday 30 September\n7.00pm (doors open 6.30pm)\nThe Minories\n74 High Street\, Colchester\, CO1 1UE\nBook tickets at eafestival.com/lilianelijn \nJoin us for an evening with trail-blazing contemporary artist\, Liliane Lijn\, whose seminal kinetic artworks redefined the possibilities of creative and artistic expression. \nFrom her motorised Poem Machines of the early 1960s that infused language with additional meaning through movement\, to her iconic spinning Koans and mesmerising masterwork\, Liquid Reflections\, Lijn merged industrial materials\, movement\, myth\, and poetry in ways that were decades ahead of their time. \nCurrently the subject of a major retrospective at Tate St Ives—Liliane Lijn: Arise Alive—Lijn will be at The Minories to discuss her acclaimed new memoir\, Liquid Reflections\, in conversation with Emma Howe\, Director of The Minories. \nBased on her diaries from 1958 to 1966\, the book charts her formative years in bohemian Paris and Athens\, her fearless experiments with new materials\, and her navigation of love\, motherhood\, and an art world deeply resistant to women. Critics have hailed it as “utterly gripping\, enraging\, entertaining—and important” (Jennifer Higgie) and a portrait of “a unique and self-renewing force of creativity for six decades” (Marina Warner). \nDon’t miss this chance to hear\, in her own words\, the story of an artist who refused to be categorised. \nBook tickets at eafestival.com/lilianelijn \nThis event is part of a series of art-themed events which are a partnership between EA Festival\, Essex Book Festival and The Minories. \n  \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cudmore Grove: an Essex Ways Story Walk
DESCRIPTION:Cudmore Grove: an Essex Ways Story Walk\nWednesday 09 July\, 1-3pm\nDiscover the stories and secrets of Essex with a guided walk through some of its finest landscapes.\nIf you want to know more about the history\, stories and places in your local area\, while getting some quality time in nature – this walk is for you! \nEssex is a land rich with cultural and natural treasures. Despite the one-dimensional view of Essex peddled by the media\, we know that our county is like a glittering ruby with hundreds of facets. There are many secrets to be discovered here; some so well-kept that not even locals know about them! It’s about time we rediscovered the many ways of Essex\, to celebrate our county in all its glory. \nThis guided walk is part of ‘The Essex Ways’ a storytelling project funded by the Essex County Council Art & Cultural Fund 2025. For this project\, Essex-born storyteller James Lawrence has undertaken an epic 400km walking journey around the county in Spring 2025. Along the way he’s collected stories: from books\, from the land\, and from Essex residents. These stories have been woven together into a series of modern Essex myths\, and shared in a series of story walks across Essex. James’ aim is to celebrate the many different sides of Essex by highlighting local heritage as well as the beauty of the county’s natural landscapes. \nOn this walk\, you’ll explore the local landscape\, brought to life with local stories told by James. There’ll be history\, folklore and legends\, from ancient times to the modern day. You’ll see just how much Essex has changed\, and how it’s stayed the same; and how solutions to the challenges Essex faces today can be found in the stories of its past. \nThere’ll also be opportunities to share your own perspective on what it means to be from Essex. And if you have a story of your own to share\, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win £50; along with your story being submitted to the Essex Sound & Video Archive\, preserving the voices of Essex for future generations. \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome\, although a minimum level of mobility is required for walking on uneven terrain. \nThese walks are free of charge (donations welcome) but please make sure to reserve your place in advance\, to avoid being turned away on the day if the group size limit is exceeded. \nYou can learn more about The Essex Ways here: manaboutcountry.co.uk/essexways \n  \n \n  \n  \n

We have so much on the six wives of Henry VIII\, why not the six loves of James I? \nThis groundbreaking new book puts James – genius\, liar\, spendthrift\, idealist\, witch-hunter – and the men he loved at the centre of one of the most dramatic stories in British royal history. \nBeginning with the brutal and mysterious murder of his father in 1567\, James’s life encompassed kidnapping\, witchcraft trials\, torture\, his mother’s beheading\, poison\, political radicalism\, religious fundamentalism\, a queen’s alleged abortion\, passionate sex\, strong love\, stronger hate\, espionage\, brothels\, and a decade-long love affair that ended in assassination. \nIt is unquestionably one of the most gripping stories in British history\, retold in Gareth Russell’s Queen James with scholarship\, biographical insight and wit. \n  \nOrder a copy of Queen James by Gareth Russell from the Essex Book Festival online bookshop at bookshop.org \n‘Gareth Russell cannot write an uninteresting book and this study of the heir to Elizabeth I describes the orphaned boy and lonely youth to better understand the troubled man he became. James is that most interesting of men – one whose best acts contribute to his own destruction. It is a warts and all story told with compassion’ – Phillipa Gregory \n‘Books like this don’t come along very often. Told with Gareth Russell’s characteristic verve and exquisite eye for detail\, it is a story so compelling and surprising that it feels as if it has been hiding in plain sight for 400 years. A stunning achievement and a must for history fans everywhere.’ – Tracy Borman\, Chief Historian Historic Royal \n  \n\n  \nGareth Russell\nPhoto of Gareth Russell credit Jake Douglas \nGareth Russell is an historian and broadcaster. Sarah needs no instruction in the inequalities that beset her gender\, but even she has her eyes opened to a darker reality when a relative seeks her help in searching for her missing daughter. Annabelle Banks was promised a situation in a prestigious household\, but there has been no word from her since she left home\, and the agency that arranged her position says she never appeared. \nSarah’s inquiries lead her to reforming campaigners trying to publicise the plight of the hundreds of girls ensnared in Edinburgh’s houses of assignation. Sarah learns how young women are lured\, deceived\, trafficked and raped\, leaving them ruined in the eyes of a society obsessed with moral purity\, and where virginity is prized as a lucrative commodity. \nDrawing upon real historical events\, The Death of Shame takes Raven and Sarah into a treacherous labyrinth of exploitation\, corruption\, high-level complicity and Victorian-style revenge porn. \n  \n\n  \nChris Brookmyre and Dr Marisa Haetzman – Ambrose Parry\nPhoto of Ambros Parry (Chris and Marisa) credit Bob McDevitt \nChris Brookmyre is an internationally bestselling and multi-award-winning author and Dr Marisa Haetzman is a consultant anaesthetist of twenty years’ experience. But in the end\, in time\, they see things as they really are. \nThomas Haller has achieved the kind of fame that most artists only dream of: shows in London and New York\, paintings sold for a fortune. The vision he presents to the world is one of an untouchable genius at the top of his game. It is also a lie. \nWho is the real Thomas Haller? His oldest friend and former dealer\, Lorna\, might once have known – before Thomas traded their early intimacy for international fame. Between his ruthless new dealer and a property mogul obsessed with his work\, the appetite for Thomas and his art is all-consuming. \nOn the eve of his latest show\, the luminaries of the art world gather. But the sudden death of a young man has put everyone on edge\, and a chain of events begins that will lead the friends back into the past\, to confront who they have become. \nA story of deception\, power play and longing\, The Violet Hour exposes the unsettling underbelly of the art world\, asking: who is granted admission to a world that only seems to glitter and who is left outside\, their faces pressed to the glass? \n  \n‘An enthrallingly intricate novel . . . impressive’ – Guardian \nA biting satire of the art world’s glamour\, pomp and greed . . . lucid and evocative’ – Daily Telegraph \n‘I really loved The Violet Hour . . . On one level it functions as a highbrow whodunnit\, and grippingly so\, but it’s much more than that\, building into a meditation on mortality and the unreliable consolations of art\, love and materialism’ – Patrick Gale\, author of Mother’s Boy \n  \n\n  \nMaggi Hambling\nPhoto of Maggi Hambling credit Douglas Atfield \nThe painter and sculptor Maggi Hambling (born 1945) lives and works in London and Suffolk. Hambling became the First Artist in Residence at the National Gallery\, London\, and in 1995 won the Jerwood Painting Prize (with Patrick Caulfield). \nHer public sculpture includes A conversation with Oscar Wilde London\, Scallop\, a sculpture to celebrate Benjamin Britten (Aldeburgh\, Suffolk – which was awarded the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture) and \, most recently\, for Mary Wollstonecraft\, unveiled in 2020 on Newington Green\, London. Museums that have held solo exhibitions of her work more recently include the National Gallery and the British Museum\, London\, and in 2019 both retrospectives were held at CAFA Museum\, Beijing\, and the Guangdong Museum of Art\, Guangzhou\, China. \nHambling has established a reputation over the last four decades as one of Britain’s most significant and controversial artists\, a singular contemporary force whose work continues to move\, seduce and challenge. \n  \n  \nJames Cahill\nPhoto of James Cahill credit Marc Vallee \nDr James Cahill is an author\, critic and art historian. His debut novel\, Tiepolo Blue (2022) was shortlisted for the Author’s Club Best First Novel Award\, and was selected in autumn 2024 for the Queen’s Reading Room. SUMMARY:Hadleigh Castle: an Essex Ways Story Walk
DESCRIPTION:Hadleigh Castle: an Essex Ways Story Walk\nSunday 22 June\, 1-3.30pm\nDiscover the stories and secrets of Essex with a guided walk through some of its finest landscapes.\nIf you want to know more about the history\, stories and places in your local area\, while getting some quality time in nature – this walk is for you! \nYou can learn more about The Essex Ways here: manaboutcountry.co.uk/essexways \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n
